A new study indicates that babies begin processing languages they hear in utero, similar to their native language. Conducted by a Montreal research team, the study used brain imaging to establish that newborns exposed to foreign languages while in the womb show similar brain responses as when they hear their mother tongue. This challenges the notion of the newborn brain as a 'blank slate', suggesting instead that language processing is shaped during gestation.
